The formula
How to calculate overtime pay
Overtime pay is the extra money you earn for hours worked beyond your normal schedule. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must be paid at least 1.5× their regular hourly rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. That 1.5× rate is what most people call time and a half.
overtime pay = overtime rate × overtime hours
gross pay = (rate × regular hours) + overtime pay
Example: You earn $20/hour and work 46 hours. Your first 40 hours pay $800. The 6 overtime hours pay $30/hour, or $180. Your gross for the week is $980. The calculator above does this instantly — including double time (2×) and a custom multiplier for union or company rates.

Exempt vs non-exempt employees
Overtime only goes to non-exempt employees. Being paid hourly or salaried doesn’t decide it alone — your salary level and job duties do.
Non-exempt — gets overtime
- Most hourly workers
- Salaried under $684/week ($35,568/yr)
- Anyone who fails the duties test
- Paid 1.5× over 40 hrs/week
Exempt — usually no overtime
- Fixed salary of at least $684/week
- Executive, administrative, or professional work
- Uses independent judgment on real decisions
- Highly compensated ($107,432+/yr): lighter test
The federal salary floor is $684/week ($35,568/year) in 2026, restored by the Department of Labor after the 2024 increase was struck down in court. States like California (~$1,352/week) and Washington set higher floors, so more salaried workers there qualify.
